Founding Story
Blog Action Day was founded by Collis & Cyan Ta'eed in the summer of 2007. With the support of their team at Envato in Australia as well as numerous volunteers, they recruited over 20,000 bloggers to write about the issue of Environment on October 15, 2007 - making the first Blog Action Day an immediate and quite unexpected success.
In 2009, Collis & Cyan asked the team at Change.org, the world's leading blog network for social issues, to take over responsibility of Blog Action Day and expand its reach. We were honored to accept the offer.
Preparing for Blog Action Day 09 has been a true team effort, and we would like to thank the many people who have made it possible, including Happy Cog West for the beautiful site design, Brian Potstra for the pixel-perfect logo, and Seth Brau for the awesome animated Blog Action Day 09 video.

About Blog Action Days
Blog Action Day is an annual event that unites the world's bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day. Our aim is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion.
Our Goal
First and last, the purpose of Blog Action Day is to create a discussion. We ask bloggers to take a single day out of their schedule and focus it on an important issue.
By doing so on the same day, the blogging community effectively changes the conversation on the web and focuses audiences around the globe on that issue.
Out of this discussion naturally flow ideas, advice, plans, and action. In 2007 on the theme of the Environment, we saw bloggers running environmental experiments, detailing innovative ideas on creating sustainable practices, and focusing their audience's attention on organizations and companies promoting green agendas. In 2008 we covered the theme of Poverty, and similarly focused the blogging community's energies around discussing the wide breadth of the issue from many perspectives and identifying innovative and unexpected solutions. This year we aim to do the same for Climate Change, an issue that threatens us all.
How You Can Help
From the smallest online journals to huge online magazines, Blog Action Day is about mass participation. Anyone is free to join in on Blog Action Day and there is no limit on the number of posts, the type of posts or the direction of thoughts and opinions.

Blog Action Day 2009: Climate Change
I am so happy to announce the topic for Blog Action Day 2009: climate change.
Thousands of people voted and together we’re going to bring new breadth to the global climate change conversation just as our leaders prepare to meet in Copenhagen this December in an effort to agree on lasting solutions to this crisis.
Today is the first day to register your blog and commit to writing one post on October 15 about climate change.
But I want to ask you to do more. Because our goal is to make Blog Action Day 2009 the biggest ever social change event on the Web.
I hope you will help promote Blog Action Day, I hope you will download badges, embed the video on your blog, follow us at twitter.com/blogactionday, and watch this blog for information about the issue, more ideas about how you can participate and–after October 15–stay involved with the issue.
The whole point of Blog Action Day is for bloggers to use their platforms, bring their voices together, and open up a conversation that has never before spread so far.
Some of the biggest and most well-known blogs have already signed up to participate, but it is the power of thousands and thousands of bloggers around the world that will make October 15 a success.
So it’s up to you. Are you ready to help by using your blog to help confront climate change and make sure our leaders know that we care and that we want solutions?

How Many Countries Are There?
This is a touch embarrassing, but I had to use Google yesterday to find out how many countries there actually are in the world. Turns out it is a slightly complicated question but there are 192 members of the United Nations and about 10 other less widely recognized states.
Great. And why did I take the time to find out?
Because yesterday, in just 24 hours, more than 800 bloggers from 75 countries signed up to participate in Blog Action Day!
I knew that BAD09 would be popular because I know that bloggers do a great job coming together to make a difference and because I know how big an issue climate change is right now. But I have to admit I was surprised to see how many countries were represented by the end of just the first day of registration.
It makes me optimistic. Climate change is an issue that demands international attention and international action. That’s why world leaders spent a whole day in New York dealing with climate change this week at the United Nations and why it is a big topic of conversation at the G20 meetings happing right now in Pittsburgh.
Now bloggers literally around the globe are getting involved. I hope everyone who has already registered keeps and eye on this number and remembers that we’re doing something on a global scale together. I also hope you will all continue to help spread the word and find bloggers everywhere who can sign up and take part.
We’ll be getting translations of the site up in a variety of languages over the coming week and you can check back for more examples of great climate and blog action opportunities.
